University of Stirling, RAK Campus, UAE invites you to the first ever Spotlight 2020;

A national-international inter-collegiate online competition! This unique event is dedicated to contemporary finance and technology and the emerging thinking in this field. You will be the voice bringing in new ideas to the festival forum. The objective of this finance/technology festival is to bring together students and inter-collegiate faculty to interact, share and disseminate existing and innovative ideas. Spotlight 2020 also aims at fostering a spirit of research and insightfulness from both the structured and latitude perspectives and to combine, analyse and synthesize: Machines, Passion and a scientific bend of mind like yours!

So welcome again to the First Season of Spotlight 2020!

Spotlight 2020 begins at 10:00 am, UAE time, on the 27th of June, 2020 at the University of Stirling, Ras Al Khaimah Campus, Online platform. The University Festival Committee has pieced together various sessions in a logical order for all participants to be able to enjoy, listen, learn, network and share knowledge as a festival cohort. The festival will conclude at 2.00 pm on the same days. We hope you will enjoy Spotlight 2020!

Category 1 : Arbitrage a Trading Game on Derivatives and Forex Trading – (CFD Trading)

In this category, the theme is ‘Trading contracts for difference (CFDs)’.CFDs are ways of speculating on financial markets that does not require the physical buying and selling of any underlying assets and financial instruments. CFD trading provides a platform to you to speculate on the moving up or declining prices of rapidly-moving global financial markets (or instruments) such as shares, indices, commodities, currencies, crypto currencies, bonds and rates, ETFs, Options and treasuries. CFD trading can be also used to hedge an existing physical portfolio.

Some of the benefits of CFD trading are that you can trade on margin, and you can go short (sell) if you think prices will go down or go long (buy) if you think prices will rise. CFDs are tax efficient in some countries.

If you are in your final year of any undergraduate degree program then you are eligible to participate on the above theme on CFDs.

A. Criteria on group participations and the numbers comprised in a group will remain the same as is mentioned in Category 1. Besides this, following criteria will also apply:
  • 1. 30-45 Minutes sessions on trading with the help of ‘Demo’ account and live figures.
  • 2. Participants should have a valid email ID and mobile number.
  • 3. The Demo account will be created instantly and allotted pseudo equity with which they can trade.
  • 4. Participants has to close all the opened positions at the end of the allowed time.
  • 5. Those who have left with highest equity will be announced as the winner.

Winning teams (First place and Runner up) will be the ‘Spotlight 2020 Star of the CFD Trading’ and Runner-up respectively. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Category 2 : Pitch Perfect - Social Fintech Business Idea (SFBI)

This will be your forum to pitch in a socially relevant Fintech business idea addressing the disruptions caused by Covid 19. You will combine your knowledge and ideas in the areas of finance and technology to harness a business relevant synergy. While doing so you will make the pitch socially pertinent to address the current Covid 19 situation. This session will eventually culminate in a competition. This ‘Pitch Perfect – SFBI’ will entertain presentation papers from all final year Undergraduate students from any discipline of study.

A. Pitch Perfect – SFBI presentation:

Your group will consist of minimum two students with a maximum of up to five. Any number of groups can participate from a University. Your group has to present an original Social Fintech Business Idea to a panel of judges and the audience. You will before the presentation submit the paper to the panel and such paper shall consist of word counts not exceeding 300 to 400 words, excluding tables, references and appendices if any. The Panel of judges will then select the best five Social Fintech Business Ideas from the presentations rendered by all the groups such as yours.

The five best selected groups will then present a pitch of their business idea to the audience (online) assuming that they are the prospective and potential investors in their enterprise. These groups will present the pitch book in Group Presentation format.

B. Note about the competition theme:

United Nations has set up a task force charged with exploring the potential of financial technology to advance the UN sustainable development goals. The UN report ascertains the potential of Fintech to revolutionize the financial landscape and at the same time ensure sustainable development. To summarize the above, Social Fintech refers to Fintech companies combining their business with social entrepreneurship to solve or tackle a social problem. Your group could come up with innovative Fintech business ideas that not only generate financial returns but solves a social problem through their unique business model.

C. While you present your paper you must address the following:

A. Criteria on group participations and the numbers comprised in a group will remain the same as is mentioned in Category 1. Besides this, following criteria will also apply:
  • • Introduce your Social Fintech business idea – Outline the social problem(s) you aim to address.
  • • Impact – Furthering the above, you will address the panel as to in your opinion how your business will make a tangible difference to the social problem that you had set upon to remedy or to transform that problem into a business enterprise.
  • • Strategy – You will then further explain to the panel, how you wish to operate your business so as to achieve both: Social and your Business goals.
  • • Marketing and Communication Plan – Once Strategies are in place, you will now inform the panel your marketing and communication plan.
  • • Financial Plan – At this stage you will render the numbers as per your business plan this includes sales forecast, operational expenses budgets, capital expenditure budgets and finally the projected Income. All these numbers will be in US $ or AED only.
  • • Conclusions – You will now summarize your ideas and presentation and indicate to your prospective investors that your ideas are worth translating into business.
  • • References – include the source of all claims made in your presentation (provide a list of references on your last slide).

Winning teams (First place and Runner up) will be the ‘Spotlight 2020 Star of the SFBI’ and Runner-up respectively. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

  • • The program coordinators will after confirming your registration send to you a mail to that effect and request your paper submission. Please note that the last date to submit your paper is 10 June, 2020 and must be send to the following e-mail ids only.

Category 3 : Tech Zest

Inside the heart of a technical event lies innovation and creativity. It is a home for great minds and visionaries to assemble and give birth to radical solutions.

The objective of this technical event is to promote undergraduate research activity at educational institutions in the UAE, and other countries, by providing a forum for students to present their work and interact with other young researchers, faculty, and industrial leaders.

Judging Criteria:

The projects will be evaluated by the panel of judges based on the impact of the project on the chosen industry and its innovativeness.

The decision of the organizers in declaring the results will be final. No queries in this regard will be entertained.

Any participant found to be indulging in any form of malpractice will be immediately disqualified.

Rules and Regulations:

• Applications should follow the theme “Impact of Modern Technology on Industry” where the scope of the projects includes, but is not restricted to the following:

Tech Exhibit 2020 welcomes write-ups from students who are interested in presenting an application/system/tool they have developed in the form of a presentation in front of conference participants and a judging panel.

Shortlisted presenters will be given 10 minutes to present their projects/ideas which can include small video of demo as well.
