Programme Director - Software Engineering
William Alistair McQueer is Programme Director for Software Engineering and Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Natural Science at the University of Stirling, Ras Al Khaimah Campus, UAE. He has more than 32 years of combined industry, government, and higher education experience, including 24 years in the British Civil Service, six years supporting the United States Department of Defense, and eight years in academia. His work bridges engineering and pedagogy through systems thinking, practice-oriented teaching, and the development of industry-ready graduates.
William holds a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Systems from Paisley University, Scotland, a Postgraduate Diploma in System Design and Data Communications from the University of Central England, Birmingham, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Post-Compulsory Education from Oxford Brookes University. His professional credentials include Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a Level 4 Certificate in Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice from Qualifi, and an ONC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Inverness College, Scotland.
Before joining the University of Stirling Ras Al Khaimah Campus, William served as Senior Computing Lecturer and Academic Quality Lead at Bath Spa University RAK and as Business and Computing School Curriculum Manager at Swindon College, where he led a team of six faculty members. He has also taught at the University of Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire College, and Bath College, while contributing to academic partnerships with the Universities of Bath and the West of England. His teaching areas include relational database management systems and NoSQL, MongoDB, user-experience design, full-stack and secure web development, operations and project management, cybersecurity, advanced networking, software quality assurance, Linux, Java, C, and C++.
His research and scholarly interests focus on integrating professional engineering methodologies into computer science education, with particular emphasis on systems thinking, active student mentoring, academic quality assurance, dissertation supervision frameworks, curriculum alignment, local large language model deployment, and agentic software development. His work aims to ensure that computing programmes remain professionally relevant, highly applied, socially impactful, and aligned with contemporary industry expectations.
William is committed to academic quality, practice-led teaching, and mentoring students to become resilient, globally oriented, and professionally capable software engineers.
